Left untreated, bladder infections can lead to more serious problems such as kidney infections. Home remedies and antibiotics can be used to treat bladder infections.

Bladder infections are not in and of themselves life threatening, but they can become more serious if not treated properly. Additionally, bladder infections cause a lot of pain and discomfort and need to be dealt with as soon as possible.

Causes and Symptoms of Bladder Infections

Bladder infections, also known as cystisis, occur when bacteria goes through the urethra and gets into the bladder. They are more common for men than women because women have shorter urethras than men.

Bladder infection symptoms include frequent urination, pain and burning during urination, cloudy urine and at times blood in the urine. In more severe cases, bladder infections may also cause chills, fever and nausea.

Antibiotics for Treating Bladder Infections

Since bladder infections are caused by bacteria, antibiotics are a common mode of treatment. Some of the most common antibiotics used for treating bladder infections include the following:

  • Bactrim. Side effects of Bactrim include yellow and blotchy skin, rashes, and paleness. Respiratory problems such as shortness of breath and coughing are also possible. Joint pain and sore throats may also be caused by Bactrim. If any of these symptoms occur while taking Bactrim to treat bladder infections, a doctor should be contacted immediately.
  • Clindamycin. Clindamycin, which also goes by the brand name Cleocin HCI and Cleocin Pediatric should not be taken by by patients with a history of kidney and liver disease, colitis or Crohn's disease, Patients with a history of asthma and eczema should notify a doctor of their history before taking Clindamycin for the treatment of bladder infections.
  • Ciproflaxin. Ciprofloxin is commonly referred to as "Cipro" and is another antibiotic used in treating bladder infections. Patients with a history of liver and kidney disease, joint problems, a history of seizures and diabetes should inform their doctor before taking Cipro for bladder infections.

Natural Remedies for Treating Bladder Infections

Although it's important to seek expert medical attention for the treatment of bladder infections, the following natural remedies can be used in a supplemental way in the treatment of urinary tract infections.

  • Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to reduce inflammation in the bladder. Since turmeric is not easily absorbed when taken alone, it should be taken with pineapple or black pepper. Though turmeric is safe for children in small quantities, it should never be given to a child straight without consulting a physician.
  • Parsley tea is an excellent diuretic and can also help reduce bacteria. To make parsley tea, boil two bunches of parsley in a quart of water for approximately 20 minutes. Strain and drink.
  • Celery seeds are believed to reduce some of the symptoms and causes of bladder infections since they have antiseptic and diuretic qualities. However, it is important to note that while the medicinal benefits of celery seeds have been tested on animals, they have not been tested on humans.

Bladder infections, also known as cystisis, are treated with antibiotics. Home remedies such as turmeric, parsley tea and celery seeds can be used as supplemental treatments for bladder infections.
